A good habit to do when you take your boat out, every time. |
Check Lists Options -• Pre-season maintenance -• Local Daily Cruise -• Shakedown Cruise -• Passage Planning -• Heavy Weather -• Docking -• Anchoring -• Emergency Procedures

-• Check bilges -• Check fuel level -• Check main oil level(s) -• Check trans oil level -• Check fuel filter(s) drain any water -• Check gen set oil level -• Start engine(s), check oil pressure, go visually check to make sure good water circulation -• Turn on VHF radio(s) -• Switch on depth sounder, make sure reading right -• Switch on chartplotter or or computer and check positions -• Switch on radar -•A very good time to check out all equipment -• Pull charts for the area you are planning on traveling -• Check portholes, shut or not? Just remember they are open if you leave them open when traveling. Many times shutting them during travel is best until you arrive at your destination. -• Secure all interior loose items -• Check(s) toilet level, reduce level if necessary. -• Listen to weather report for your area -• Make sure your dingy is secure -• Record in your logbook: date, time of day, current position, current weather conditions, main engine hours, gen set hours to date, estimated fuel on board -• Disconnect shore power, water, any other reconnections -• Single up lines to be released from the deck. Release springs lines. Coil up lines on deck and secure or stow -• Once you pull anchor, or leave slip, stow fenders -• These are just some basics, your vessel may require more or less data entries. • Better to be prepared and no surprises while under way.

Other Information Boating for pleasure should be fun for all. But if you do not know what you're doing then you should learn. Boating is serious. You are responsible for your boat and any damage you may cause and all those on board. All on your vessel passengers should know what to do in an emergency. Do they know where the life preservers are and how to use them and how to use the VHF radio. How to stop the boat. How to drop the anchor. How to give position of the vessel to the Coast Guard. Where and how to use the fire extinguishers(s). Where and how to use the flares.
